On Sunday, May 10, Wacoans were celebrating Mother’s Day. These photos are a sample of what downtown Waco looked like. No one could have guessed that in twenty-four hours an F5 tornado would change the face of Waco forever. Seventy one years ago.

These photos are from The Texas Collection, Baylor University.

  1. I lost some good friends in that fiasco , we had moved to Hearne in February for my Dads construction job .. My Dad’s boss had rented a room in Hearne and went home on weekends ,he said what was normally a 2 hour trip only took him 45 minuets to get back to his family … We moved back to Waco shortly thereafter ..A distant cousin worked on the 19th floor of the ALICO Bldg. and said that the building was built with a built-in 3 ft sway for wind , , they had those big ole grey metal desk that are found commonly in offices and they were sliding from one side of the room to the other , , time to bail out … Waco , , my home town …..
