  1. This poor building needs a lot of love! Someone removed most of the vines that used to drape over the wall on the left side of the Fyffe building. The awning has poles supporting it but it is in danger of collapse. Some of the structure is made of wood, therefore it probably has termites and dry rot.If you look closely you will see that their is brick behind the stucco. This is what I mean by restoration. Some fine brick layers built these buildings oh so many years ago and it would be great to see the original structure behind that stucco. This is where the problem lies with preserving the old murals. They would have to be taken off those buildings oh so carefully, restored and perhaps encase them so they would be protected and either hang them back on the buildings they are on after restoration, or display them in a museum here in Waco. The other problem is the very high, crumbling sidewalks. It is my opinion that they were built this way to have higher ground during flooding periods. After Whitney dam and Lake Waco dam were built they had more control over the how high the Brazos rivers flood stage is. With the addition of the Aquilla dam the Brazos is now well controlled. I know this because we have lived on the Brazos for many years. It has a certain high point and rarely goes further than the indicator trees I use to gauge the crest stage of the river.
