In February of that year the city council approved renovating the building to become EWL’s new home. Since 1961 it had been located at 1011 E. Live Oak. That library replaced the Wheatley library (which was the Negro or Colored library as it was called during segregated times) that opened in 1938 at 619 N. 6th. The building at 901 Elm originally was Waco’s first H-E-B when it opened in September 1949 (per some newspaper ads I found 4 years ago for a customer). H-E-B closed it in 1973. Prior to being an H-E-B is was a Cameron Co lumber yard. Our community services librarian asked me Thursday if we have a photo of the building when it was H-E-B, but I’ve never seen one that I recall. I took this one last year when I filling in over there.”
