“The oldest liberal arts college for blacks in the State of Texas, Paul Quinn College began in Austin in 1872 as Connectional College. It moved to Waco several years later as a trade school located at Eighth Street and Mary. Pictured here is its East Waco location on land formerly worked by slaves of the Garrison Plantation. Paul Quinn College maintained a slave block, marked by the X, as a reminder of the past.”

From the book “Waco Texas Crossroads” (1983) by Patricia Ward Wallace.
