The Chicken Shack

The Chicken Shack, located at 909 North Loop Drive, was one of Waco’s well-loved restaurants. Opened in 1934 by Frank L. Strange, Wacoans loved the Chicken Shack’s specialty, Leslie’s Fried Chicken. They were also known for their homemade rolls…served with butter and honey! An additional location was opened in the 1970s at
1724 South Valley Mills Drive.

Both locations are gone now, but anyone who knew it can remember the amazing taste, and many would say it was the best fried chicken they ever ate!

      1. Leslie was my great uncle, the desert was my grandmothers (she ran the original restaurant with Leslie). She is gone now as well… but I will see if anyone has it.
I still have yet to get to go to one of the restaurants 🤨

  1. I was in Corpus Christi for a few days and there is a Chicken Shack down there off of I-37 at Violet Rd exit north of town. I tried to stop in and have some chicken and get more info about the place. But it was Saturday and they’re only open Monday – Friday 11-8. I did get a picture of the sign which I believe was from one of the Waco locations.

  2. In the 1950’s, on family trips in our Buick between Fort Worth, where we lived and Bryan, Mama’s home town. We often stopped at the Chicken Shack in Waco for lunch or supper depending on our direction of travel. Mama in particular loved the food and I seem to remember they had some excellent pies on the menu as well as the outstanding chicken. At the time the Chicken Shack was a well known Texas tradition.
